Bernoulli Phenomena

Ideal for grades 6-8, this lesson involves students completing five simple experiments to experience unexpected outcomes. The experiments all focus on Bernoulli’s principle. From their observations, the students create explanations of their results. Lesson closes with a discussion of Bernoulli’s principle and its effect on the five experiments.

• Approximately 2 m long, 15 cm wide plastic bag (known as a “windbag” and available on Amazon. Alternatively buy Diaper Genie refill cartridges, which are available from the baby section of supermarkets and Walmart).
• Ruler
• Bendy straws
• Clear straight straws
• 1-liter pop bottle (Cut off the top of the bottle near where the bottle stops curving and begins to straighten out to create a funnel)
• Drinking glass
• Food coloring
• Ping pong ball
• Hair dryer
• Scotch tape
• Scissors
• Paper (normal letter size paper is fine)
• Empty pop can
• Two mugs (that will fit pop can)
