Borax-Free Bouncy Ball

Balls have been around for thousands of years. The earliest balls were made of stone and wood, but the discovery of natural rubber meant that people could make balls that bounced! Ideal for grades 2-5, students use basic materials to create a bouncy ball in this experiment. Along the way they note the state of the mixture and how heating can cause it to become a solid.

After completing this experiment, students will understand:

• how heating a mixture can create a change in state
• properties of different mixtures and materials

Required resources:

• 3 tbsp cornstarch
• 1 tbsp + 1 tsp water
• 1.5 tsp water
• 2-3 drops food coloring (optional)
• Mixing cup/bowl (microwave safe)
• Measuring spoons
• Microwave
• Plastic bag for storage
• Optional: popsicle sticks
