Currents

Downloadable (1 PDF - 10 pages)

Ideal for grades 6-8, these experiments are designed to help students identify the fundamental currents that drive ocean and weather systems on our earth. After seeing the results of their initial experiment, students will experiment with how changes in global temperatures, due to global warming, may affect these currents.

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Understand that currents are found both in air and water
  • Recognize how global temperatures can affect these currents

Experiment 1: Water Currents

  • Kettle for hot water (~1L)
  • Thermometer
  • Ice cubes (2 dozen)
  • Clear rectangular dish (~2L capacity for hot water)
  • M&M candies (standard type)
  • Water dump bucket or sink

Experiment 2: Air Currents

  • Exposed incandescent light bulb + fixture
  • Talcum powder or baby powder

Experiment 3: Climate Change

  • Additional ice and hot water
  • Additional light fixtures
  • Fan
  • Hair dryer
  • Cellophane wrap
  • Paper towels
