Modelling Waves

Ideal for grades 3-4, in this lesson students will investigate the pattern of waves and describe in terms of amplitude and wavelength. Students will model a wave and show how energy can be transmitted in waves.

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define and identify amplitude and wavelength
  • model how energy is transmitted through a wave

  • Large container for water (preferably see through)
  • A cork
  • Different weights
  • Deep bowl
  • Saran wrap
  • Several grains of rice
  • Drum or something to produce a loud sound
  • Skipping ropes, soft flexible ropes or slinky springs
  • Pipe cleaners of various colors
  • Blank paper and tape
