Classroom Hydroponics

Ideal for grades 3-5, in this lesson students will grow plants from seeds to harvest in their own simple hydroponic systems.

After completing this experiment, students will understand:

• The basic needs of plants and how they can grow them through hydroponic systems

Required resources:

• Empty soda bottle (1 per group of 2-3 students), clean and pre-cut to separate top from bottom
• Coconut coir (available at gardening store and Amazon)
• Yarn
• Seeds (basil, lettuce, spinach)
• Cotton wool
• Aluminum foil
• Hydroponic Fertilizer (e.g. General Hydroponics FloraGro, available on Amazon)
