Ideal for grade 3, during the Design Masterpiece activity students will research tipis, focusing on the choices of materials and design. The lesson will conclude by having students create their own tipi, justifying their material choice.

By the end of the activity students should be able to:

• Select appropriate materials for creating a model tipi
• Use a variety of materials to construct a model tipi
• Explain material choices for construction of a model tipi
• Understand simple designs are usually cheaper and easier to build
• Understand that simple designs are often as effective as more complex ones
• Provide an example of a simple, yet effective design
• Identify the purpose of a tipi
• Use tools and materials safely and effectively
