During the Animal Dentistry activity, which is ideal for K-1, students will observe pictures of the teeth of 3 different animals that live on the grasslands. Based on observations of these visible characteristics they classify these animals according to their dentistry and their resulting diet. They use this information to build numerous food chains of specific animals on the prairies.
By the end of the activity students should be able to:
- Identify characteristics of various plants and animals
- Categorize living things into various groupings
- Identify and understand the basic needs of living things and how they meet these needs
- Identify different ways living things add value to other living things and the world in general
- Understand and construct a basic food chain
Additional resources included with the activity plan:
- Student worksheet
- Vocabulary cards
- Animals and teeth cards
- Answer cards
- Food chain cards
- Build a food chain mat
- Plant and animal identification guide
