During the Plant Leaf Design activity, which is ideal for K-1, students will investigate the biodiversity in plants. In particular, students will observe plant leaves and how diversity allows for organisms to live in different habitats. From this, students will work in groups to design and present a leaf that would work for a specific habitat.
By the end of the activity students should be able to:
- Identify characteristics of various plants and animals
- Categorize living things into various groupings
- Identify and understand the basic needs of living things and how they meet these needs
- Understand and explain the environment/habitat for various plants and animals
- Understand that some plants and animals must adapt to the environment in order to meet their basic needs
Additional resources required:
- Samples of leaves from house plants and outdoor plants/trees
- Pictures of plants or leaves found in books or from online research
- Paper and colored pencils
Optional additional resources (for extension):
- Colored paper
- Scissors, tape, glue
