In this activity, which is ideal for grades 4-5, students will expand their knowledge from food chains to food webs. Through this exploration, students will create and learn about the complexity and interconnectedness of food webs. Students will consider ways which human interactions effect the environment around us, and what they can do to positively impact the environment.

By the end of the activity students should be able to:

  • Identify various plants and animals found in wetlands
  • Create food chains and food webs
  • Identify factors which contribute to the survival of plants and animals in habitats
  • Identify human actions which can harm and help ecosystems
  • Recognize the interconnectedness of all living things in environments
  • Understand and provide examples of producers, consumers and decomposers

Additional resource required:

  • Computers / laptops for students (can work in pairs)
  • Flip chart paper (one sheet per group)
  • Flashcards (one for each students)
  • Styrofoam / plastic cup (one for each student)
  • Water
  • Any clear, basic solution (eg. dish soap)
  • Phenolphthalein
  • Eyedropper
  • Masking tape
  • Ball of yarn
