In this activity, which is ideal for grades 4-5, students learn about wetland ecosystems and the general food chains that exist in aquatic environments. Emphasis is placed on how human activities impact existing food chains. Students will be in groups of five to role play a pond ecosystem and write a skit to film a two-minute video.

By the end of the activity students should be able to:

  • Identify various plants and animals found in wetlands
  • Understand the important role of all plants and animals in ecosystems
  • Create food chains and food webs
  • Understand the importance of sun in food chains and webs
  • Identify factors which contribute to the survival of plants and animals in habitats
  • Recognize the interconnectedness of all living things in environments
  • Understand and provide examples of producers, consumers and decomposers
  • Understand the differences between the primary consumers, secondary consumers and tertiary consumers
  • Understand the differences between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores
